Start at Independence Palace, then move towards the post office and Book Street before following Dong Khoi towards the Opera House. This is a suggested order, not a guided tour or a promise of step-free pavements. Give it roughly half a day with a palace visit; skipping the interior makes it a shorter outing.

The City Museum is an optional detour before the theatre. If the weather turns or someone gets tired, leave it for another day. A route should help you enjoy the city, not force you to finish every stop.

Visit lengths are LVN planning estimates. Prices and opening hours can change; check the linked source before travelling.

1. Independence Palace

135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Ho Chi Minh City

Allow 90–120 minutes

Choose the palace for architecture and the setting of a major turning point in Vietnam's modern history. Reception rooms and the building itself offer a different experience from a museum organised around display cases. Leave time for the separate exhibition if you buy the combined ticket.

The official site lists daily visits from 07:00 to 18:00. Adult palace-only tickets are 40,000 VND; palace plus exhibition is 80,000 VND. Check special closures before travelling.

2. Saigon Central Post Office

2 Cong Xa Paris, Ho Chi Minh City

Allow 20–30 minutes

Keep this stop short and unhurried: look at the main hall, then leave room in the day for the neighbouring streets. Pairing the post office with Book Street makes more sense than travelling across the city for a single photograph. Respect working counters and other visitors.

Treat it as a daytime stop and check access on arrival. Nearby buildings may have separate entry rules; being able to see a landmark from the street does not guarantee interior access.

3. Nguyen Van Binh Book Street

Nguyen Van Binh, Ho Chi Minh City

Allow 30–45 minutes

Bookshops and cafés make this a natural pause beside the post office. Browse at your own pace instead of treating the street as a quick corridor between landmarks. It is a useful choice when a group wants a quieter stop, although individual shops set their own hours.

Ask a bookseller about Vietnamese authors or illustrated local titles. Book purchases and café orders are separate from simply walking along the street.

4. Ho Chi Minh City Museum

65 Ly Tu Trong, Ho Chi Minh City

Allow 60–90 minutes

Pick the city museum when your main question is about Saigon itself. Its city-focused exhibitions make a useful counterpoint to broader national-history collections. It is also a manageable addition to a central walking day, rather than a separate journey across town.

This is the museum at 65 Ly Tu Trong, not the Ho Chi Minh Museum at Nha Rong Wharf. Check the official visitor information for tickets, opening hours and temporary exhibitions.

5. Saigon Opera House

7 Cong Truong Lam Son, Ho Chi Minh City

Allow 15–30 minutes

The theatre is a useful anchor for an evening around Dong Khoi. Viewing the exterior is a short stop; attending a performance is a different plan that needs a ticket and more time. Lune Production lists its Saigon performances online, so check the actual date rather than assuming a nightly show.

The suggested time here covers the outside only. For a show, use the organiser's schedule, arrival guidance and ticket conditions. Do not buy tickets based on an old blog price.

Plan your visit

A comfortable pace

Start early enough to avoid doing the whole walk in the midday heat. Carry water, use designated crossings and expect uneven or busy pavements. A short vehicle ride between stops is a sensible alternative, not a failed walking tour.

Tickets and spending

Budget separately for palace or museum admission, refreshments and any evening performance. The theatre stop in this route is an exterior visit unless you book a show. Check current opening and access notices for each building.
